It was the year between 6th & 7th grade. The year when things started making sense. I was understanding individuality and realizing that I didn't need to be like all the other girls from Nordstrom's Charm School. My friend Christie's Aunt gave me Meat is Murder and The Queen Is Dead tapes. I really could relate! I was already into tons of New Wave, 80's stuff and of course rap, but these tapes essentially changed everything. I was immediately prompted to find out exactly what everything meant, in the lyrics, the literature references and the siren that would be draw me in for the rest of my life. I was so amazed that a musician could be so poetic and so right on my adolescent level. The sounds drowned me out and here I wake today, still impacted and influenced by the strange and lovable sounds of The Smiths. Since I received the tapes, I have been to countless Smiths/Moz conventions, concerts featuring one or more members ( I have now seen them all ), and owe tons of rare bootlegs. Even my high school boyfriend, Johnny, was obsessed. My sister introduced me to a guy Tony, who was so fortunate to meet Moz one day. This kid Tony went so far as to have Moz sign his arm and then go and get it permanently tattooed on his arm forever. I don't blame him, I would have done the same. If you have not heard The Smiths, now is the time. Johnny Marr is an amazing guitarist who shreds any fuckin hippie jam band away. Paired with Morrissey's poerty and soothing voice they make an unstoppable team who will never be reckoned with. Unfortunately, The Smiths split in the 80's, but you can still see all members separately. Not as fun as the days of the Cemetery Gates, but you can always find Moz performing his new hits, or watch Johnny Marr DJ in Portland... as for the rest of the members... they rock too.. it is just Morrissey and Marr are a team of genius who will never be matched.
So, take me out tonight...

Eric Foster (Mr Boxed, pixelfactor) reached out to Goldielocks, the latest artist to come out of Croydon, a South London area that is known for the birth of Dubstep. Goldie has made a name in the UK underground not only as an mc, but her production skills are also heavily requested. Download the exclusive mini mix from Goldielocks made just for us.

Hey Goldie, let’s start out with asking what the word “Dubstep” means to you?
Goldielocks:
Beer, Spliffs, and Croydon
Mr Boxed:
The US club scene differs a lot from the UK scene, especially the London scene. What can someone expect these days from the underground club scene here in the UK if they have never been?
Goldielocks:
I would say its pretty cool without trying to hard. Obviously there are some people out there who only go out to check what everyone else is wearing but you usually find at the good nights that the people are more into the music. I run a night called ‘Hardknock Wife’ which started out as a way to showcase my own music but now it’s become more of a little scene. We have live grime, hip hop and other UK underground music, and then live DJs playing dubstep, garage, grime etc. It’s pretty sick, not to big myself up or anything ;)
Mr Boxed:
Could you explain when and how you started to produce/MC?
Goldielocks:
It started back when I was really young, I used to play music in primary school and do motown cover songs in assembly with my friends on the xylophone and shit, looking back it was well good considering I was about 7! Then I played the flute Drums, so I always had musical stuff going on but never knew how it was all going to fit together. Then I found this college called CM (www.cmsounds.com) and learnt how to make beats. Then I started doing vocals as a bit of a joke and people seemed to like it…god knows why!
Mr Boxed:
Your from South London. How do you think this has inspired you and your musical style / flow ?
Goldielocks:
I have a south London accent so I guess that affects how my music sounds, some people don’t like it but that’s how I speak. I often get compared to Janet Street Porter…cringe! Where I live inspires me to write about stuff, things I see, people I know etc.
Mr Boxed:
Your new record “Kids/ Drug-Dee-la” just dropped this month on the infamous Locked On label. How did that come about?
Goldielocks:
Well I signed my publishing to Puregroove, they are basically the same crew as 679 and the old garage label Locked On. When I signed to them they thought it might be cool to resurrect the label after like 10 years and put my stuff out, so we did.
Mr Boxed:
You have a collab coming out later this year with Benga aswell…tell us a bit about that.
Goldielocks:
Ha! You will have to ask him about that, we started a few bits but we’re both really busy so can never find time to finish them off! It will happen though, I promise.

Food, weed, alcohol, money, lack of money, love, Lee Scratch Perry, Dr Dre and Hall & Oates.

Introduced to dance music as a school boy, DEFine used to listen to and swap the latest mix tapes in school and venture into the local record shop to collect fliers for his bedroom wall. Through this activity a natural progression into the scene lead to more involvement in the music industry. Living in Milton Keynes, home of the legendary ‘ Sanctuary music arena ‘ and growing up with musicians such as Capdown, musical inspiration was always on his doorstep.
The late 90’s saw DEFine starting to dj out on a regular basis playing many of his first gigs on the illegal rave scene, being a part of Junction 14 crew and playing at such parties like Exodus, Survival and many others. It was here that he developed an appreciation for a heavier, more technical sound of Drum and Bass, influenced by the likes of Technical Itch, Dylan, Loxy, Kemal, Dom and Roland and labels like Renegade Hardware, Outbreak, Biotech, Penetration, Cylon and Flex.
His performance exposure further fueled his passion for the musical approach he strived for, and was soon co-running Milton Keynes first regular Drum and Bass club night. This lead to an addiction to the Drum and Bass sound and his keen enthusiasm and dedication secured an abundance of bookings and residencies both in the UK and Europe.
The next obvious progression for DEFine was into the studio - Mid 2000, alongside such peers as ; Infiltrata, Amaning, BTK and L Double he developed and mastered a unique, well engineered, original sound which lead to successful releases on DNB labels like Barcode, Human Imprint and Infiltrata Recordings.
Most recently DEFine has been captivated by the contemporary sound of Dubstep, receiving a lot of support and a residency at Sub Conscious and sets at events like Kontact and Stink Like Sock and future releases planned with SubConscious Recordings and Mode Recordings in 2008.

Subconscious Recordings Launched
Boxed Media's Eric Foster has launched his new dubstep label. Subconscious will be providing kicking cuts & lots of collaborations. Howard Marx, B Real, 12th Planet, Define, High Rankin & Unorthodox are just some of the artists who will be putting together collaborations for the label. Subconscious will also include newcomers to the camp like Rakoon, Macabre Unit, Trill Bass & Loetech.
Their first release, which you can expect out shortly is a “future soca dubstep beat” from 12th Planet feat. the notorious Howard Marks – "Spliff Politics", backed with Define featuring Howard Marks – "48 Hours".

DMZ: Brixton, England
Eric emailed me this picture this morning. It is of Johnny: Inflitrator, Eric & I at DMZ (http://www.dmzuk.com/) in Brixton. This was my last night in Europe and we spent it in true propper style. Talk about bass! I had ear plugs in and I could still hear it... more like feel it! It was DMZ 3rd Birthday Bash and we got mashed! I swear we can't help it, but damn kidz rage! Mad LOVE!
Milton Keynes
Welcome to England! At least that is where I think I am. Eric and I reunited after 5 years yesterday at the Heathrow Airport. It was good to see him. Once we started talking we couldn't stop... so much has gone on with both of us... so much to tell! But enough about those... new memories to make now! Still in a coma from my pilliage (fligth + pills), we cruised around north to where he lives: MLiton Keynes. Apparently in the middle of nowhere on a farm. Very gorgeous and rual as all hell. This is the real rual shit! Seriously, rolling hills and such... not like the hills of Northern Cali. It is rather cold here but the sun is shinning with pure love. Today is day 2 and I am still a bit jet lagged. Tomorrow I am off to London. Stay tuned for the good times... because my friend, they have only just begun!LOVE YOU!
